The year 2000 looks particularly auspicious for Asian cinema. Iran, Japan, South Korea and China have been stealing the limelight from the West at the most prestigious film festivals. Each of these new waves has followed its own course. Building on the momentum, a few South American directors are also leaving their mark on the other side of the world.
