Without accurate data all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will remain just that – a set of goals. Data is crucial for countries to monitor progress and develop evidence-based policies. Global monitoring of progress is carried out through the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and the Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM).
Monitoring takes place through two types of indicators, 43 thematic indicators of which 11 are global. UIS assesses progress and provides information with maps and charts to illustrate national and regional data.
GEM releases its annual report every September which is an invaluable global resource and advocacy tool.
UIS-led indicator development
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics is the official source of cross-nationally
comparable data on education. UIS' blog explains the role in the new Global

To ensure coordination in monitoring the data, UIS has convened a Technical Cooperation Group (TCG) composed of representatives from UNESCO, Member States, the Global Education 2030 Agenda partner agencies, civil society organizations and with the Inter-agency Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs).
UIS is also working with UNICEF and the World Bank to ensure standardised data and reporting on equity – a core commitment of the global agenda. It has also established a Global Alliance to Monitor Learning, which supports efforts by countries to measure learning outcomes.
