Celebration of the International Day for Universal Access to Information in the Khartoum / Omdurman / Bahri metropolis

On the 28th September 2016 the Khartoum office for UNECO with the support from the Cairo office and in collaboration with the Sudanese Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, the Sudanese National Information Center, and the National Commission for Education, Science and Culture organized a celebration of the International Day for Universal Access to Information. The event took place at the Sudanese National Information Center in presence of more than 200 participants from different backgrounds including Academics, Government Officials, Private Sector, NGO, UN Agencies, and diplomatic community.

In his welcoming speech His Excellency the State Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Mr. Elsadig Fadelallah highlighted the importance for access to information to the Sudanese Government, particularly with the recent endorsement by Parliament for laws relevant to data/information accessibility.  The Head of the Khartoum office of UNESCO, Mr. Pavel Kroupkine, delivered to the public the message of the General Director of UNESCO on occasion of the Day. He also highlighted UNESCO’s achievements in Sudan, and underlined the further interest to support more activities to the benefit of the Sudanese society.  The General Secretary of the Sudanese National Commission of UNESCO, Mr. Abdulgadir Noureddin emphasized the importance and value of UNESCO’s assistance, which was provided to the Sudanese Community – including being the initiator and supporter for the setup of the National Information Center where the celebration was held. The Director of the National Information Center, Mr. Mohamed Abdel Rahim Yasin highlighted achievements of the Center and stated their intention to improve effectiveness and performance to facilitate more access to information from the public side.

During the celebration it were honored the notable professionals who contributed to Information and Communication in Sudan, including the UNESCO representative.

Also, the event included refreshments to allow participants to network and socialize, with wonderful view over the Blue Nile River from the 24th floor of the tallest building in Sudan.
