Fourth Meeting of States Parties to the 1970 Convention and Fifth Session of the Subsidiary Committee of the Meeting of States Parties to the 1970 Convention

The Fourth Meeting of States Parties to the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property will take place at UNESCO Headquarters (Room XI) from 15 to 16 May 2017, immediately followed, from 17 to 19 May, by the Fifth Session of the Subsidiary Committee of the Meeting of the States Parties to the 1970 Convention.

In addition to the renewal of half of the Members of the Subsidiary Committee (9 new Members out of 18), and considering the ongoing situation in countries such as Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Mali and Afghanistan, the Meeting of State Parties will be invited to discuss, among other issues, actions undertaken to implement UN Security Council Resolutions 2199 (2015) and 2253 (2015), and the strengthening of international cooperation in this regard, as well as the [on] ground situation in these countries concerning illicit traffic and destruction of cultural heritage.

The Fifth Session of the Subsidiary Committee of the Meeting of the States Parties to the 1970 Convention, composed of representatives from 18 States Parties to the 1970 Convention, will also hear presentations on good practices and successful restitution cases, UNESCO’s actions in conflict zones and on international cooperation actions taken by UNESCO’s partners, and discuss a variety of matters including the role of education in preventing illicit trafficking of cultural property.
