The sixth annual global celebration of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week will take place from 25 October to 1 November, 2017, under the theme “Media and Information Literacy in Critical Times: Re-Imagining Ways of Learning and Information Environments”. The Global MIL Week 2017 highlights include its feature event, namely the Seventh Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Conference. The feature conference will be hosted by the University of the West Indies, and will take place from 24 to 27 November, 2017 in Kingston, Jamaica.
The 2017 week takes place in the context of rapid changes in politics, economics, development and social life. On one hand, people have not fully grasped the increasing value of media and information in all forms. On the other hand, it has become more difficult than ever before to make sense of the growing abundance of information and the proliferation of content posing as authentic news.
Against this backdrop, an understanding of the media and information environments, which is made possible by MIL, becomes an essential aspect of the learning and education of everyone.
Global MIL Week and its feature conference enable the sharing of the latest research, projects, new ideas, and information with a diverse connection across stakeholders and countries involved in MIL, and in print, screen-based and digital media. In addition, this year’s Global MIL Week feature conference will underline how MIL can bridge the gap between learning in formal education environments and learning in other information environments.
One key feature of Global MIL 2017 is the Youth Agenda Forum that will take place on 24 October 2017. The Youth Agenda will creatively engage youth in MIL through music, poetry, debates, collaborative work etc. UNESCO and partners encourage young persons to see registration information below.
